Frequently asked questions
Do I need a student card to use the library?
Nope! All students and staff can be found in our system by last name or student number.
Can I work in the library any time?
Yes! As long as the library is open as a study space, and not reserved for a class, you are welcome to come in and work. When you enter, you will see a sign indicating whether the library is open as an individual and group work space, closed for a class, or open for silent study only.
Do I have to be quiet in the library?
The library is a great space for group work! That said, we ask that groups are limited to three per table and please ensure that your noise doesn't interfere with others. A "productive buzz" is the goal.
Can I bring slurpees and donuts in?
NO! No food and drink should come into the library. You're welcome to bring a water bottle but please be careful. We have a lot of expensive books and technology so food and drinks are not permitted.
Do you have my favourite book? If not, can you order it?
Click here to visit the library catalogue and see if we have your favourite book. If we don't have it, click here to request a book. We love requests!
Can I Volunteer in the library?
We love student volunteers! Most student volunteers sign up for an open block or two and come weekly. Please see a teacher-librarian to sign up! We also have students taking Library Science 11 with Mrs. Fulgueras as a course for credit.
Why is the library closed during some blocks?
The teacher-librarians often collaborate with other teachers and use the library as a teaching space for students to work on projects, learn research skills, select books for novel studies, and more. As we are teachers, we enjoy working with classes and our colleagues. This means that sometimes the library work area is closed so that a class can use the space to work specifically with a group. Occasionally, the library might be closed if a teacher-librarian is called on to cover another class or is on a field trip. You can always print and borrow books/laptops when the work area is closed.
I'm new on staff. Can I book the library for my class?
ABSOLUTELY! We are happy to reserve the library for your class. If you like, we are also available to co-plan or co-teach with you. We can plan lessons on research skills, talk to your class about novels they may enjoy, help you put together lit circle collections, and more! If you would like to have your students do "book clubs" or "lit circles" instead of a whole class novel study, we are happy to recommend books and help students select books. Please chat with us about how we can support you and your students this year.
Can I borrow a laptop?
Yes, we lend out laptops to students for daily use only. All laptops are due back at 2:40pm. If you lose a laptop, don't return technology on time, are seen being irresponsible with our technology, or aren't using technology properly, expect to receive a warning or technology ban. As well, your family, TA, or support teacher can contact us if they don't want you using laptops from the library.
Is there really a dragon living above the library's ceiling?
Congratulations on making it to the bottom of this page! No, there's no dragon...that we know of...or is there?
